Forest finds

The first time I encountered the old growth forests of Paljakanvaara, some of the last remaining in Finland, I was immediately captured. From the yard of Mustarinda the edge of the old growth forest looks like a border, like an open invitation. Being so near to it feels like being pulled by something invisible, so I slip in, and let the forest envelope me. Once there, I keep thinking about borders, not as a rigid line keeping things apart, but as a zone of contact, allowing for new combinations and unexpected encounters.

Being within the forest I am enveloped by an infinite amount of soft green shades and constant activity that overwhelms my senses and understanding. I am made aware of how limited my perception is among all the liveliness happening around me. Here, to encounter means to be surrounded, startled out of the ordinary sense of order.
